چکیده

Alcoholic Korsakoffs, patients with right-hemisphere lesions, long-term alcoholics and normal control subjects were examined on three tests of facial memory and encoding. The Korsakoffs and patients with right-hemisphere lesions were impaired in their memory and simultaneous matching of unfamiliar faces. Their performance on a facial processing task indicated that they matched faces on the basis of superficial features such as paraphernalia and expression rather than the deeper configurational characteristics of faces. It is suggested that such superficial encoding may be partially responsible for these patients’ visuoperceptual and memory problems.

Functional MRI study of diencephalic amnesia in Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Anterograde amnesia in Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome is associated with diencephalic lesions, mainly in the anterior thalamic nuclei. Whether diencephalic and temporal lobe amnesias are distinct entities is still not clear. We investigated episodic memory for faces using functional MRI (fMRI) in eight controls and in a 34-year-old man with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and diencephalic lesions but ...

Left and right hemisphere contributions to physiognomic and verbal discrimination.

The relative contributions of the right- and left-temporal lobes in rapid recognition of faces and letters were studied in patients with anterior right- or left-temporal lobe excisions and a matched control group. On the basis of findings in patients with unilateral and bilateral brain damage, it was hypothesized that left hemisphere damage would not change the reaction time of letters analyzed...

Different Profiles of Verbal and Nonverbal Auditory Impairment in Cortical and Subcortical Lesions

A B S T R A C T Introduction:We investigated differential role of cortical and subcortical regions in verbal and non-verbal sound processing in ten patients who were native speakers of Persian with unilateral cortical and/or unilateral and bilateral subcortical lesions and 40 normal speakers as control subjects. Methods: The verbal tasks included monosyllabic, disyllabic dichotic and diotic tas...

Spatial location memory in amnesia: binding item and location information under incidental and intentional encoding conditions.

Items located within an array were presented to alcoholic Korsakoff and nonalcoholic mixed-etiology amnesics and to alcoholic and normal controls. Recognition memory for the locations of items was tested after incidental and intentional encoding. When equated on item recognition, neither Korsakoff amnesics nor alcoholic controls benefited from intentional, relative to incidental, encoding instr...

Hemispheric encoding asymmetry is more apparent than real.

Previous neuroimaging studies have claimed a left hemisphere specialization for episodic "encoding" and a right hemisphere specialization for episodic "retrieval." Yet studies of split-brain patients indicate relatively minor memory impairment after disconnection of the two hemispheres. This suggests that both hemispheres are capable of encoding and retrieval. In the present experiment, we exam...
